Save the Planet: Eat a Kangaroo
October 11th, 2007 by Scott
Here’s something you won’t often hear me say: Greenpeace has a really, really good idea. Oh yeah, I said it. But unlike their basically useless attempts at disrupting evil corporations from, say, clubbing a bunch of baby seals and then dumping crude oil over their little patch of ocean for good measure, one of their new strategies is both tasteful and appealing. And what, pray tell, is this novel approach to helping out Mama Earth? They are suggesting that instead of eating beef, people change things up a bit and throw some kangaroo steaks on the barbie.
Now that’s what I call environmentalism!
Believe it or not, their reasoning is actually quite sound. It’s been well-documented that our current agricultural practices (ie. LOTS of beef cattle burping up greenhouse-causing methane gas), contribute to that whole global warming thing everyone’s complaining about these days. The potential benefits of a kangaroo/beef swap are tremendous, not just for the environment, but for hungry, conscientious carnivores as well. The evidence:
First, kangaroos don’t produce methane like cattle and sheep do, so in theory if you eat a ‘roo tenderloin instead of your run-of-the-mill NY strip, you’re doing your part to combat global climate change. Good for you. Second, kangaroo meat is about as free-range as meat can get. There’s no such thing as a kangaroo CAFO; all ‘roo meat comes from animals that have been carefully culled from overpopulated herds by the Australian government, with oversight by the RSPCA. Next, not only is kangaroo a delicious, deep crimson meat, it’s also very good for your body, seeing as it’s rich in protein and iron, low in fat and cholesterol, and contains high levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which actually helps you build lean muscle and burn fat.
And lastly, if you’re still unconvinced, maybe you’ll want to eat a kangaroo because they can raise hell on a NASCAR track. And we can’t be having that, now, can we?

Any where we can find roo meat in Greenpoint?? Since I highly doubt that, is there anywhere in NYC that sells it, or a resturant that serves it?

First off there is not too much difference in-between Kangaroo meat and Deer meat. Both are good eating. I like a good Stake though. Yes cattle have been scrutinized for producing methane when they pass gas. However, I am not that sold on the fact that a bunch of cows have screwed up our atmosphere. Ok maybe they contribute, but there have been cows, sheep bison and other mammals throughout our planets history that have all passed methane gas. In my opinion, yes eat a kangaroo. Not because it’s a save us all, but because it is a tasty treat. Stop skirting the real problem, automobiles the dump ton after tons of poisons gases in to our atmosphere daily. Another way to help it to stop cutting down trees to make paper and use the internet to get your local .

Actually, the agriculture business produces almost twice as much greenhouse gasses than automobiles. Auto emissions come in third behind agricultural and industrial emissions, respectively. Not to mention the impact from CAFO runoff into local communities. Also, the kangaroo population in Australia has become overpopulated giving anther incentive to eat their meat more, beyond just the taste (which is delicious to say the least)and reduce their impact on farmers and the environment there.
